Dusted Off (feat. Tony Burkill)

A 2 track british folk single (8m 8s) — released April 21st 2023 on ATA Records

"Dusted Off" is the first single from the soon to be released Love Of The Brave album, lovingly coaxed from ATA's vaults this is a very special project for the label.

Perhaps best know for their jazz offerings, this honeyed slice of 60s psyche Brit folk may seem like a departure for the Leeds based label but, in fact, this is pretty much where it all started.

ATA wasn't even a fully-fledged label when "Dusted Off' was recorded on 2010, the country was still picking itself up after the crash of 2008 (very apt time for this record to surface) but Neil Innes, label boss and bassist on this track, had decided to pump whatever scraps of cash he had into tape machines that never stopped needing to be fixed, a mixing desk which drew a pension and a pretty decent case of hypothermia. Though, to be honest, the last one was free.

ATA was slowly starting to come together, both physically and as a concept, and Love Of The Brave dropped perfectly into this process. Recorded solely on an 8-track tape machine, without a computer in sight, their self-titled album has the timeless honour of being the first project recorded in the studio.

Vocalist Fuzzy Jones appears to be channelling the moors-drenched folk lilt of Jacqui McShee through the spiralling psyche soul of Rotary Connection Minnie Riperton, with a nod to Christine Perfect. This is heads music, just as relevant on a drool inducing music system as it is drifting over an open field.

ATA fans will have noted some regular label players on this single, Joost Hendrickx on drums, hard not to recognise, and Work, Money, Death's own Tony Burkill giving an early matinee of what he was capable off with a solo that could peel the paint off the wall, in a good way, then come back, lay down a base coat and do you something fancy.

"Dusted Off" is a plaintive, and meditative, an easy place to lose yourself for as long as you can, Brit folk with an acid edge.

The continued productive relationship with many regular ATA players was another reason Neil felt it was time to release Love Of The Brave to the world, the label is proud of the musicians it works with and it seemed only respectful to show where the journey began.
